Will toll hike be slashed to $1.50?

CBS 2 News is reporting the governors of New York and New Jersey will approve a Hudson River toll hike of only $1.50 -- compared to the $4 proposed by the Port Authority.

The PATH fare would go up 25 cents, compared to the requested $1.

The bi-state agency's commissioners are scheduled to meet Friday and vote on the plan. All of them were appointed by the governors, who also can veto any board action.

The TV news station didn't say how much the car-pool toll, now $2, would go up.

  1. The original PA proposal had car pool tolls going up to $6 and then increase in future years to be 50% of the peak E-Z Pass rates ($14 in 2014). I did not see anything in the joint letter by Christie and Cuomo today about their approved toll increases that mention anything about the car pool tolls. Maybe everyone in their clique of wealthy do gooders don't even know there is a car pool plan discount toll. If you find out anything from your PA sources about the car pool plan tolls, let your readers know.

  2. The Record's story today is silent on the Car Pool Plan, as it is called.

I'll have to rely on the PA Web site after the today's vote.

  3. They still eventually get what they want. Christie is full of hot air. Another crooked politician.

  4. As per the PA press release, the new tolls for Carpool Discount Plan for Class 1 (passenger cars/trucks) or Class 11 vehicles (MOTORCYCLES) with three or more people is: E-ZPass® off-peak and peak tolls shall be $3.50 effective September 18, 2011; $4.25 effective the first Sunday in December, 2012; $5.00 effective the first Sunday in December, 2013; $5.75 effective the first Sunday in December, 2014; and $6.50 effective the first Sunday in December, 2015. It will end up more than triple the current carpool discount toll of $2. There is no cash discount for cash toll payers. You really have to laugh to think that someone actually lobbied to give a carpool discount to motorcycles with 3 or more people. I guess membership in that lobby for motorcycle carpool riders must be much bigger and more powerful than I thought. 5. Thanks.

How do you get three people on a bike? Guess you have to have a sidecar.

  6. I looked at the Port Authority press release and the only discount that doesn't change next month is the off-peak toll for hybrid cars. There is no peak discount for hybrids:

GREENPass - eligible low-emission Class 1 vehicles: E-ZPass® off-peak toll shall be $4.00 effective September 18, 2011; $4.75 effective the first Sunday in December, 2012; $5.50 effective the first Sunday in December, 2013; $6.25 effective the first Sunday in December, 2014; and $7.00 effective the first Sunday in December, 2015; and the E-ZPass® peak toll shall be $9.50 effective September 18, 2011; $10.25 effective the first Sunday in December, 2012; $11.00 effective the first Sunday in December, 2013; $11.75 effective the first Sunday in December, 2014; and $12.50 effective the first Sunday in December, 2015.
