Why is Wells Fargo story on Page 1?

In February, Wells Fargo Bank paid for an ad wrapped around the front page of The Record. Today, it's payback time, with a front-page story on the peanuts the bank raised for Japan relief.

Where do you think the order came from for that Page 1 story today on a measly $1.3 million contribution to Japan from Wells Fargo Bank's ATM machines. The advertising department? The publisher's office?

After all, Wells Fargo is the same bank that presumably threw $200,000 or $300,000 at The Record of Woodland Park for a four-page ad that was wrapped around the A-section and covered the front page on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011.

Bully for you

The Record today ends a three-part series on bullying among school children -- without ever mentioning adult bullying, a subject that got a freelance reporter fired at North Jersey Media Group's AIM Vernon weekly, even though her editor approved the story.

The best the paper can do on adult bullying is a lame column by Editorial Page Editor Alfred P. Doblin (A-23) that has absolutely no relevance to North Jersey.

Up on the roof

Judging from all the local municipal news in the paper today, head Assignment Editor Deirdre Sykes and her minions treat the newsroom as one big restroom, then spend a lot of time on the roof of the Garret Mountain building looking for stories, such as the two Paterson reports that appear on L-5 today.

They apparently can't see Hackensack from there, which may be why the weekly Hackensack Chronicle is the first to report about major solar-panel projects on top of Bergen County's parking garage, which is across the street from Costco, and on the roof of the Prosecutor's Office in Paramus.

Pee-Wee Herman

Foot in mouth

Readers have to plow through eight, tortured paragraphs on "The Story" of Andiamo, an Italian restaurant reviewed in Better Living today, but the turn-off comes right away.

Restaurant Reviewer Elisa Ung reports the owner took the restaurant's name from something an actress said in a film starring kiddie-show host Pee-Wee Herman. Herman, you might recall, was arrested on charges of masturbating in an adult movie theater.

I think I've lost my appetite.

  1. Victor,

I don't know if you read John's column online or in the Record newspaper today.

In 2nd page of his column in today's paper, he titles himself "Paragon of Concision", which I'm assuming in his pompous answer to all his critics, who question whether he credibly answers reader's questions without leaving out allot of critical details to support his explanations.

"Paragon of Concision" sounds more like the farcical title of a Mel Brooks movie about the Road Warrior.

The Road Warrior train wreck seems to be speeding up without anybody knowing the real extent of the damage that he is causing.

At some point in the near future, some more powerful headlines are needed to shock readers into better awareness of the vast extent of these Road Warrior problems.

  2. This last comment refers to the Road Warrior column that ran on April 1, 2011.

For readers of John Cichowski's column, every day is April Fool's Day.

  3. Paragon of concision? The Road Warrior is so full of hot air, he's more like Paragon with the wind.
