Eye on The Record

On July 6, 2016, Gannett, the nation's biggest newspaper chain, paid the Borgs $40 million for North Jersey Media Group (The Record of Woodland Park, Herald News, NorthJersey.com, (201) magazine and 50 weeklies). Stephen A. Borg, publisher for a decade, oversaw the biggest downsizing ever. Local news declined, errors mounted and most employees were denied raises. Gannett replaced Editor Deirdre Sykes, revised The Record's website and redesigned the print edition, cutting another 350-plus jobs.

NJMG stuck with big property tax bill

North Jersey Media Group continues to pay more than $675,000 in annual property taxes to the city of Hackensack, where it is preparing to close its old headquarters at 150 River St.

The newspaper company -- which publishes The Record of Woodland Park, Herald News, weeklies, (201) magazine and other publications -- is paying these taxes in 2010:

150 River St. -- $628,560
80 River St. -- $36,084
76 Bridge St. -- $12,238

The city Tax Collector's Office supplied the figures.
