First, let's get rid of all of those greedy lawyers

In Fort Lee, a 47-story building near the George Washington Bridge -- destined to become the tallest in Bergen County -- is being sheathed in reflective glass.

Today's Page 1 story about three lawyers "who figure prominently" in the government's case against Joseph A. Ferriero sends a clear message.

The greed of lawyers seems to know no bounds.

The Record identifies Donald Scarinci, Kenneth Hollenbeck and M. Robert DeCottis as "three of the most influential lawyers in New Jersey -- confidants and fundraisers to governors, senators and other key political figures" (A-1).

None was charged in last week's federal racketeering indictment of Ferriero, former Democratic Party boss in Bergen County.

Travel klutz

Travel Editor Jill Schensul has traveled all over the world, but knows little or nothing about what's going on around the corner.

The first line of her Sunday cover story on old trains shows she is less familiar with public transit than Road Warrior John Cichowski or transportation reporter Karen Rouse:

"Americans today may never truly get on board the railroad as a public transportation concept" (T-1).

Schensul should drop by Manhattan's Penn Station any weekday afternoon and watch the stampede of North Jersey commuters racing for a seat on an NJ Transit train.

Big Brother?

Who wrote that stupid over line on the Page 1 photo of two brothers who play on opposing football teams?

"BIG BROTHER" is a far more ominous concept than one player being the other's big brother (A-1).

Then just below the photo, the headline on the Ferriero story echoes the word "big."

"Big" appears for a third time on A-1 in a brief referring readers to an L-1 story.

Local yokels

Readers looking for an expanded local obituary come up dry.

Instead, head Assignment Editor Deirdre Sykes gives a California car dealer a royal sendoff (L-5).

Cal who?
