'Let them drink wine'

What was the response to my appeal to the publisher and editors of The Record of Woodland Park yesterday on the need for more reporting about the obesity epidemic?

Today, the Better Living front tells readers what wine to pair with takeout food, and the story is even promoted on Page 1.

Did even a single reader write in to reveal anxiety every time he/she drinks wine with takeout, and ask Food Editor Bill Pitcher for guidance?

Or is this more elitist coverage of food, reflected in the spoiled Borg siblings' investment in a wine bar in Englewood, and the weekly listing of expensive wine dinners?

For every wine dinner listed, Better Living has to omit health ratings for several restaurants in the 90 or so towns in its circulation area.

Yesterday, I wondered whether Publisher Stephen A. Borg's attitude toward readers who wanted more information on the obesity epidemic is, "Let them drink wine."

Pitcher and Features Director Barbara Jaeger seem to have provided the answer today with this frivolous take on takeout and wine.

At least Page 1 today tries to assess the progress toward Florida and up the East Coast of the disastrous BP oil spill, with a large graphic.

But Washington Correspondent Herb Jackson seems to have adopted the role of publicist for the Tea Party with yet another A-1 story on these inconsequential right wingers.

Jackson is one of those reporters and editors (and they are legion) who can't stop writing about politics -- a huge turnoff to readers. Charles Stile, are you listening?

Local leads with yet another story about the case against Police Chief Ken Zisa. This is just about the only Hackensack news the paper has printed for weeks and weeks. Now, a police captain has been charged. I can sleep better knowing this.
