Hater of women, Mexicans, Muslims will never get elected

Just before noon on Wednesday, driving in Englewood seemed pleasant, especially with trees blooming on Engle Street, above. But leaving in the afternoon only showed rush-hour traffic is as bad as ever as city officials refuse to eliminate a few parking meters and install turn lanes at Dean Street and Palisade Avenue, below, and other downtown intersections.

Donald Trump has tapped into a deep reservoir of racism and hatred of women, Mexicans and Muslims, but two things seem assured.

The billionaire and member of the 1 percent will never get elected president as long as Democrats and other liberals protest by going to the polls in November.

And as the Republican nominee, Trump will preside over the destruction of the Grand Old Party, which has been propped up too long by racism, conservative values and crackpot Tea Party members.

Trump's desire to punish women for having abortions in on Page 1 of The Record today, but he plays second fiddle to the so-called controversy over state exams (A-1).

Aircraft noise

Look at all the space Editor Deirdre Sykes has been giving to Ho-Ho-Kus, Mahwah, Paramus, Ramsey, Ridgewood and Rochelle Park over a flight-path change going into effect on Monday (A-1).

Sykes has ignored complaints of Teterboro Airport noise from Hackensack, South Hackensack, Englewood, Teaneck and other towns for more than a decade.

Of course, Ho-Ho-Kus, Ramsey and Ridgewood are richer and whiter than long-suffering Hackensack, Englewood and Teaneck.

Shmuley's house

Shmuley Boteach, the publicity hungry rabbi who gives Jews a bad name, is trying to unload his huge pile of stone on the East Hill of Englewood (L-1).

In 2009, Sykes gave unprecedented coverage to Boteach, who knowingly purchased a mansion next door to a Libyan-owned estate in Englewood -- then complained about the planned visit of Moammar Gaddafi.

King Christie is going after minorities once again

What disability would allow someone to install tile and park legally in a handicapped space at 24 Hour Fitness in Paramus? This seemingly able bodied driver was at the gym before 9 a.m. Tuesday, above and below.

You could make a good case that Chris Christie is a racist, starting with his removal of the state Supreme Court's only African-American justice only a few months after the governor was inaugurated in 2010.

Are there any minorities in Governor Christie's Cabinet or did Christie appoint any to the Port Authority, the patronage mill that runs the region's bridges, tunnels, sea and airports?

Today, The Record reports that Latinos and blacks are complaining of a "disorganized system of processing applications [for federal housing grants to Superstorm Sandy victims] that in effect discriminated against" minorities (A-3).

Christie made storm recovery -- financed almost entirely by the Obama administration -- a centerpiece of his reelection campaign this year.

The governor also has refused to sign a bill passed in the state Senate that would grant in-state tuition rates at public colleges and universities to some students who are living in New Jersey illegally (A-3).

Christie claims the bill grants more benefits than the federal program, and would make "us a magnet state for people."

At least he called illegal immigrants "people."

Hasn't Christie noticed that the Garden State is one of the most diverse in the nation, and that with its seaport and international airport -- only miles from New York City -- that it is already a magnet for legal and illegal immigrants?

That damn PA

The Record continues to gush ink over the big, bad Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Today, an editorial (A-22), two Opinion pieces (A-23) and a Road Warrior column (L-1) expand on the brouhaha over the closure of some Fort Lee toll lanes to the upper level of the George Washington Bridge in September or a toll hike that kicks in on Sunday.

One of Christie's flunkies -- David Wildstein, a former columnist for a state political Web site -- is taking the heat for closing the lanes for a "traffic study."

On Tuesday, The Record identified Wildstein as a "former political consultant" and "Christie's No. 2 at the agency."

So, is he a former columnist who called himself "Wally Edge" or a former consultant or did The Record screw-up again?

More babbling

The Road Warrior column is usually difficult to fathom, but Staff Writer John Cichowski is just babbling on and on today about matters unrelated to Monday's legislative hearing on closure of the GWB toll lanes:

He refers to "people who make and remake New Jersey's transportation laws," "a plan to bring driverless vehicles to New Jersey" and "extending a Queens rail line to our shores" (L-1).

Cichowski also reports the lane closures occurred "11 weeks ago without bloodshed."

City Clerk is defiant

In Hackensack news, the new City Council is asking City Clerk Debra Heck to step down or it will remove her (L-1).

Heck has been city clerk since 2002.

"I am not resigning. I did not do anything wrong," Heck said, referring to charges she is not doing her job properly.

The council voted unanimously on Monday night to file a written complaint with the state, seeking her removal, but The Record either didn't cover the meeting or couldn't get the story into Tuesday's paper, because of its notoriously early deadlines.

Editors ignore Obama's victory over racism

President Obama is back, thanks to a clear victory over Republican Mitt Romney, who appealed almost exclusively to white conservatives.

You won't find any mention of the Republican Party's stubborn racism in The Record today, especially in the editorial on A-18.

Republicans just can't get over a black man in the White House.

Blaming the victim 

In fact, Editorial Page Editor Alfred P. Doblin has started to blame Obama for not bridging the partisan divide created by no-compromise Tea Party members who have paralyzed Congress.

"Obama failed to jump into the breach and use the power of the presidency to end congressional gridlock," the editorial claims.

That sounds good, but is Doblin suggesting Obama use drones to take out Tea Party members?

It's so typical of Doblin and other journalists to write nonsense and assign blame without backing that up with even an explanation of what they mean.

Dissing another Democrat

Before Tuesday's election, Doblin endorsed Teaneck Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen, but that came too late after weeks of slanted news coverage favoring Rep. Scott Garrett, R-Wantage, one of the most regressive forces in Congress. 

Today's A-3 story on Garrett holding onto his seat in the newly configured 5th Congressional District says "Gussen struggled for name recognition."

What a joke. The Record ran a long, flattering profile of Garrett on the cover of the Signature section, complete with three large photos, but never profiled Gussen, a Democrat.

And Washington Correspondent Herb Jackson rolled over and played dead every time Garrett declined interviews that would have exposed his radicalism.

Boteach complains

Also on A-3 today, get a load of the photo showing Rabbi Shmuley Boteach of Englewood complaining he is the latest Jew to have been crucified. 

Boteach, a Republican, ran unsuccessfully against Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr., D-Paterson. 

Back to Sandy

Coverage of the presidential election pushed stories on Hurricane Sandy off of the front page for the first time in about 10 days

The A-6 story on who still doesn't have power is long on quotes from Governor Christie and the head of Public Service Electric and Gas Co.,  but short on details, especially about Hackensack and many other towns.

There is no mention that 24 Hour Fitness in Paramus, one of the biggest gyms in North Jersey, remains closed.

Trainers and members have been consoling themselves with beer at the adjacent Miller's N.J. Ale House, which is operating on generator power.  

Christie doesn't have "a problem" with the pace of power restoration, but who is surprised about that?

Look how the GOP bully folded when the Port Authority raised tolls 50% more than a year ago, knowing full well he was in the process of packing the bistate agency with his cronies. 

Confused Road Warrior

The Record continues to publish misleading and inaccurate information in the Road Warrior column (A-8).

Staff Writer John Cichowski has made numerous errors, but rarely does the paper run corrections, despite complaints from readers.

Today, Cichowski offers a confused anecdote about a Teaneck man who lost his electricity and then plugged his Chevy Volt hybrid "into his home charging station." 

Apparently, all the man is saying is that he never drives beyond the 35-mile range of the Volt's electric motor and batteries, and never has to fill up his tank with gasoline, because he recharges the batteries every night with his $8,000 home generator, which uses natural gas.

The 300 reserve miles he refers to is the car's range on gasoline, which powers the Volt's generator. 

What's the big deal?

Promoting bad food

Food Editor Susan Leigh Sherrill's weekly recipe is a godsend to cardiac-surgery units at local hospitals (BL-1).

Sherrill must have been affected by fumes from a gasoline-powered generator to dust off a cookbook with a recipe for homemade bacon jam.

Yes. An entire pound of fatty, artery clogging cured bacon -- raised on harmful antibiotics and growth hormones, and filled with preservatives -- goes into the stomach-turning jam (B-2). 

I guess that is what she is recommending for the next blackout.
