Fans of "Eye on The Record" point out that I have deteriorated into a lot of name-calling while exposing the shortcomings of editors and reporters at the former Hackensack daily.
I will try to be more constructive in the future, though the editors will always be lazy and incompetent in my book. There is no other way to describe so-called journalists who have been around for decades and who have fooled the Borg family into keeping them on year after year.
Three come immediately to mind: Deirdre "Laughs A Lot" Sykes, Tim Nostrand and Jim McGarvey, who have been shuffled from one to job to another or in McGarvey's case, left the paper and returned, only to prove what a poor performer he is. In his latest incarnations, he has resorted to shouting at his reporters to motivate them.
The relative newcomers, Frank Scandale and Frank Burgos, lead a newsroom that can't write straight and are about as inspiring as franks and beans -- with all the attendant gas.
On July 6, 2016, Gannett, the nation's biggest newspaper chain, paid the Borgs $40 million for North Jersey Media Group (The Record of Woodland Park, Herald News, NorthJersey.com, (201) magazine and 50 weeklies). Stephen A. Borg, publisher for a decade, oversaw the biggest downsizing ever. Local news declined, errors mounted and most employees were denied raises. Gannett replaced Editor Deirdre Sykes, revised The Record's website and redesigned the print edition, cutting another 350-plus jobs.
That's it. Leave Nostrand alone, Victor. He has more brains in his pinky than most editors there have in their entire hand(s). BTW: McGarvey ALWAYS shouted at reporters, going back to the early 80s. Nothing new there.
ReplyDeleteMy suggestion: You want to go at 'em, nail the undeniable. For instance:
ReplyDelete"Valerio Rodano, 21, of Wayne walked into township police headquarters Wednesday morning, flanked by his attorney, Richard Baldi."
... who apparently has looked at Val from both sides now.
It first takes someone to write it, then an editor to read it and pass it along, then at least two more sets of eyes to let it through.
There are plenty more where that came from....
Keep us the good work, Jerry.
